An avatar is a representation of you that you use online instead of a picture - some of the examples above are people's avatars that they use. There are many avatar creating sites to choose from, but make sure you try them out first and build an avatar for yourself. The following are a few that have been used by students.
NOTE: None of these is html5 and therefore won't work on an iPad. There are html5 versions out there - check out CodeCanyon - http://www.script-tutorials.com/codecanyon/face_builder/

Urfooz Creator:
A good site for creating an image of yourself or your students that you can use online.
NOTE: I always have the students take a screen snapshot of the finished product rather than SAVE as you have to become a member of the site to SAVE.

Build Your Wild Self (New York Zoos and Aquarium):
Sponsored by the New York Zoo and Aquarium, this site allows you to create your human features and then add the elements of you favourite animals. You may want the arms of a gorilla and the tail of a zebra - it is your choice!
NOTE: Again, I usually ask students to take a screen snapshot of their finished product and not have to have leave details in the site
